Stepparent Adoption in Reno
More Than 2,000 Adoptions and Surrogacies Guided
A stepparent may share the daily responsibilities of raising a spouse’s child, but caregiving alone doesn’t create legal parent status. Adoption establishes a permanent parent-child relationship through a court order, with the rights and responsibilities that come with it.
At Eric A. Stovall, Ltd., we guide Nevada families through close-family adoption, the process used when a stepparent or another relative seeks to adopt. We evaluate parental consent, the rights of the child’s other parent, petition requirements, and any issues that may need to be resolved before the adoption hearing.
Call (775) 227-7221 to discuss your family’s circumstances and the legal steps involved in a Reno stepparent adoption.
Address Consent & Parental Rights Before Filing
In a typical stepparent case, the child’s parent and prospective adoptive parent file as joint petitioners. The process may be relatively direct when everyone whose agreement is required consents. An absent, unavailable, or objecting parent can raise additional legal questions because nonparticipation isn’t automatic consent.
Our guidance can address:
- Required participation: Identifying who must join the petition and whose consent, relinquishment, or notice may be required.
- Parental rights: Determining whether termination of parental rights must occur before the case can proceed.
- Petition preparation: Accurately presenting the family relationship, the child’s circumstances, and the requested legal relationship.
- Court procedure: Preparing for filing requirements, judicial review, and the hearing.
- Related orders: Reviewing existing custody, visitation, support, or parentage orders that may affect the case.
